I am looking at a 1983 Hilburn houseboat that is re-done but in the hull along the keel there seems to be significant rust. I can pick up half-dollar sized flakes with my fingers and some of the cross member are rusted out where they would join the hull. The seller said a new hull was welded over the existing and provided receipts of work done. The hull is completely dry with no sign on water. Boat will likely never be out of the slip but Lord, that rust has me spooked. Is this type of repair usual and adequate for a steel hull houseboat? I sure wish they had addressed the inside rust as well. Wife loves the boat but, I am worried.
